AB OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of an experimental HIV/AIDS
teaching strategy for Polish nurses. METHODS: A 3 day HIV/AIDS course
based on US train-the-trainer models was adapted for use in Poland.
Anonymous, unmatched, pre- and post course questionnaires measured AIDS
knowledge, comfort discussing sensitive topics with patients, and
confidence in ability to provide patients and staff with HIV/AIDS
information. RESULTS: 22 nurses with supervisory and teaching
responsibilities at major facilities in Gdansk, Poland, participated in
the course. Although the level of pre-course knowledge about HIV/AIDS
was high, significant changes were seen in the nurses' comfort with
sexual topics and instructional confidence. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT
VOLUME. CONCLUSION: Experimental train-the-trainer models can be
successfully adapted for use in a variety of cultures.
